Nobody schedules a flat tire. The best time to figure out who you'd call is before it happens, so here's a local option worth knowing about.

Simon's Towing and Recovery works out of 500 Eagles Ln in Stillwater. The Better Business Bureau lists the business, as Simon's AAA Towing, as started on Feb. 6, 2003, which makes about 23 years in town (the BBB notes it doesn't verify what businesses report). The dispatcher line is (405) 372-6666.

What they handle

Tows are the obvious one: cars, motorcycles and semi-trucks. But the list is longer than most people expect.

Stuck in mud, snow, sand or a ditch? They do winch-outs and pull-outs, including trucks and SUVs. Flat tire? They'll change it on the spot if you have a spare and it's safe, or tow you to a shop. Dead battery? A jump-start, or a new battery supplied and installed. Locked out? Technicians use specialized tools, usually within minutes and without damage to the car. Property owners and managers can also call them to remove unauthorized vehicles, with authorization.

What happens when you call

You reach a dispatcher, and they send a driver. Inside Stillwater, the company says it can usually be there within 30 minutes. Farther out, count on an hour or two or more.

Price depends on distance, vehicle type and time of day, and they give quotes over the phone. The company's site says it takes cash and cards; the BBB lists cash, check, Discover, MasterCard and Visa.

How far they'll go

Their homepage says they're based in Stillwater and serve anywhere in the state. Their FAQ describes a core area within about 30 miles of town, including Cushing, Perry and Cleveland, and says they handle long-distance tows as well. Short version: close to home first, farther if you ask.

The big rigs

They advertise semi-truck towing with a 30-ton tow truck, around the clock. Their pitch is straightforward: when your livelihood depends on getting back on the road, you need a towing company you can count on.

Three small things to do now

Save the dispatcher's number in your phone. Know exactly where you are when you call, because arrival time depends on it. And ask for the price on the phone before the truck rolls.

By their own account, the company is a neighborhood outfit ("more than just a towing company") and an AAA vendor, with 24/7 availability and what they call fair, transparent pricing.
